I'm of the opinion that if you want blonde highlights, get blonde highlights. Anyone who is so rude as to tell you that ';blonde isn't in this year'; isn't your friend and their opinion doesn't matter.

make sure it blends nicely, I don't think chunky striped looking hair has ever looked good.
Just get that done.
